The Ruins of Gorlan

The Ranger's Apprentice 1: The Ruins of GorlanThis is the first book in the Ranger’s Apprentice series, and is one of the best. It follows Will and Horace, two orphans that grew up in the Castle Redmount ward. Will and Horace want to go to the Knight Academy. Although Horace gets in, Will doesn’t – but Will gets selected to be in the Rangers Corps.

My favorite character is Halt, Will’s teacher.  He is a loner Ranger and it’s funny to watch him get annoyed at Will’s constant questions. I would highly recommend this series to anyone interested in fantasy.  [Gr0met5242]

Will is an orphan in Redmont Castle with a few of his friends. He is chosen to become a Ranger’s apprentice. He and Halt, his teacher, go out to fight the Kalkara. They return safely and are greeted with open arms. I really enjoyed this book because there was a lot of action and fighting. A major character gets hurt, which is very interesting.

Will and his wardmates are going to “The Choosing.” This will determine their trade. Will is determined to become a Ranger, even though he has always feared them. He adapts to Halt, his master, and begins training. Soon he goes hunting dangerous beasts, the Kalkara. Halt and others are injured, but Will stops them. He becomes a legend.

In this book, Will reminds me of myself. He is creative and really hardworking. Also, he adapts to his new master. I think I have adapted a lot to new people.

Actually, at first Will is determined to get into Battleschool because he believes his father was a great Knight. (Later it is revealed that his father was actually a farmer who fought bravely in war and saved Halt’s life). Will is denied entry into BattleSchool and is told to come the next day about his future. During the Choosing, Halt, the Mysterious Ranger, comes in and gives Baron Arald a note. Will, who is very curious, sneeks in later at night by scaling the tower Baron Arald’s office is in. Halt, who is a master of Unseen Movement, catches Will and reveals to him that he has the qualities to be a Ranger. Will is reluctant at first because he has feared Halt his entire life, but soon he realizes that he made the right decision.

I own this book and have read the series multiple times. I highly recommend it.
