The Invention of Hugo Cabret

Hugo Cabret’s father died in a fire.  His uncle ran away and died, so now he is taking care of clocks in a train station.  He finds a machine and tries to fix it.  As the story goes on, Hugo has to put pieces of the past together to figure out the future.  This book has pictures and is an easy read.  Also you have to figure out what the pictures mean and how they fit with the text.  This is one of the most engaging books I have read.  [shopcutie517]

The Penderwicks

penderwicks_110This is a wonderful book about 4 sisters, 2 bunnies, a dog and an interesting boy.  The Penderwick sisters tell a story of their vacation where they meet a boy, run into a bull, and sneak around a garden.  I wonder how this adventurous and romantic book will end.  For all of you who say “EWW” to the romance, there isn’t much.  I would encourage everyone to read this amazing book.  [Giggly Girl24]

Vanishing Acts

vanishingacts_110Delia Hopkins is leading the perfect life. She has a brilliant attorney husband, a wonderful daughter, she is famous for her job, and her father was the best father in the world.

But what if her father wasn’t?

The police show up one day at their door, and they have come to arrest Delia’s father. He is accused of kidnapping a young girl and then changing her identity to kep her away from her alcoholic mother. The young girl he kidnapped … is Delia.

Delia, confused and hurt, goes back to the place of her birth and sees her father in court, her real name, a mother she thought had died in a car crash, and everything for her falls apart.  Does Delia’s life ever go back to normal? Don’t ask me. Read the book.  =)  [Elena]

Wuthering Heights

wutheringheights_110Wuthering Heights takes place back in the 1800′s. A traveler, Mr. Lockwood, is seeking shelter from the storm outside, so he stops at Wuthering Heights. He notices strange things about that place: how the master, Mr. Heathcliff, is so cruel, how he has a widowed daughter-in-law who he hates, and how in the middle of the night there is a ghost in the room he is in. When Lockwood moves to his new house, Thrushcross Grange, he meets a maid who has worked there since she was a child. It is the maid who unravels the tragic story behind Heathcliff, and the other inhabitants of Wuthering Heights.

I really like this book. It’s amazing how Catherine can be so selfish, and Heathcliff so cruel. Heathcliff ruins the lives of 2 generations with his malignance. It’s a jaw-dropping story that really makes you think.  [Heather]

Notes from the Midnight Driver

notesfromthemidnightdriver_110Alex Gregory did something stupid. One night, when his Mom was out on her first date since she broke up with his Dad, Alex got drunk on some of his Dad’s old vodka he never moved from the house, took his Mom’s car, and went over to his Dad’s house to give him a piece of his mind. But along the way, he crashes.

Soon after the crash he’s arrested and after blowing chunks on police officers a few times, goes to the hospital. Once he gets out, his Mom, Dad, best friend, and society are mad at him. And society makes Alex pay.

A month after the accident, he goes to court and gets his license taken away for two years, and has to do 100 hours of community service at a retirement home. And of course, he gets paired with the grouchiest, meanest, Yiddish speaking old man in the joint, Soloman Lewis. How will Alex survive?

This was a great book with a lot of unexpected twists and turns. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie, as this is its indirect sequel.  [John]

Return of the King

returnoftheking_110Frodo has reached Mordor with his friend Sam and their guide Gollum. But evil hangs in the air around them, and Gollum must fight a battle to resist the call of the ring. Will he risk all to recover his precious ring, or will he remain loyal to his kind master?

Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli must take a strange path to Minas Tirith, city of Gondor. Gandalf the White takes them all to Isenguard to question Saruman. But Saruman reveals nothing, and is kept prisoner by the ents.  Gandalf takes Pippin with him to Minas Tirith, but their welcome is not as warm as they had expected …

A really good book. Also, there are two or so chapters in this book that were cut out of the movie!  Not saying any more, I may spoil the book for you.

Smiles to Go

smilestogoWill Tuppence acts like a worrywart.  After he found out that protons decay, he starts to worry.  His little 5 year old sister, Tabby, bothers him so much, and it seems as if she just loves to torture him.  His best friend BT is a carefree, go-with-the-flow kind of guy who skatedboards down Dead Man’s Hill, and his friend Mi-Su is someone who becomes very special to him.  I think this story was good, and if you like Jerry Spinelli, read it.  It has fear, romance, sadness, friendship and love.

The Willoughbys

willoughbysNewberry Award Winner Lois Lowry has produced another outstanding piece of literature.  Unlike The Giver and Number the Stars, this book is a humorous examination of human relationships.  As parents and children try to get rid of each other we learn great vocabulary (thankfully there is a glossary) and see kids learn to change their nefarious ways and become affable and winsome individuals.  Will the parents get rid of the kids, or will they meet a chilly end on the mountainside?  To learn if Commander Melanoff finds his long-lost son or the baby left on the front steps, check out The Willoughbys today.

One day they get a NEW nanny — BUT SHE’S A MAN. He has a shiny bald head and cool clothes on — he likes to be called the “manny.” He’s really whimsical! They have picnics on the roof and write “just married” on the Eurovan to see who honks. He dresses up to meet the kids at the bus stop. Everyone loves him — except for Lulu, so she starts “the manny files.” It’s a notebook that has bad stuff about him written down. Now he’s in serious trouble. Will he get fired?
