The Ruins of Gorlan

The Ranger's Apprentice 1: The Ruins of GorlanWill and his wardmates are going to “The Choosing.” This will determine their trade. Will is determined to become a Ranger, even though he has always feared them. He adapts to Halt, his master, and begins training. Soon he goes hunting dangerous beasts, the Kalkara. Halt and others are injured, but Will stops them. He becomes a legend.

In this book, Will reminds me of myself. He is creative and really hardworking. Also, he adapts to his new master. I think I have adapted a lot to new people.  Book 1 of the popular series The Ranger’s Apprentice.  [nk]

Sapphique

SapphiqueFollowing the events of Incarceron, Finn has escaped the prison, only to find that outside life isn’t all that good. Between trying to save his friends and keep himself alive, Finn is quite busy. Speaking of friends, Keiro attempts to locate the Grove of Sapphique, which will allow the bearer to escape the prison.

The story was okay. It was not the best book that I’ve ever read. It was a bit confusing, but I will say that it was better than the first book of the series. I won’t recommend this book to read, but at the same time, I won’t say not to read it.  [!!??]

The Lightning Thief

lightningthiefPercy is just a normal 6th grader, except for the fact that he has been kicked out of six schools, has a teacher who loves Greek mythology, a stepdad called “Smelly Gabe,” and a BFF who acts younger than twelve but has a beard. Weird, right? Things get even weirder when he is on a field trip and gets into trouble for something he didn’t do. Then he gets attacked by a teacher that he defeats with a pen-turned-sword from his mythology freak teacher, Mr. Brunner. Eventually, he gets kicked out of school and a stalker friend, a weird stepdad, a dead mom, a Minotaur, and some “tightie-whities” later, he finds himself at Camp Half Blood, a place for demi-gods. Percy gets introduced to some other demi-gods, Greek mythology, and camp toilets. He gets sent on a quest with his best friend and a daughter of Athena, where he must retrieve Zeus’ lightning bolt. He comes across a few issues along the way, but he has to keep going because Western civilization is a stake. Will he make it?

I LOVED this book! Learning about Greek mythology was really interesting. Annabeth was my favorite character because she didn’t let anyone mess with her and she was smart. Everyone should read this book. It’s fantasy, historical fiction, a little sci-fi, and romance (if you know where to look).  [trh99]

The Sea of Trolls

The Sea of TrollsJack is an average eleven-year-old boy in A.D. 793. That all changes when he and his sister are kidnapped and enslaved by the Berserkers.  This book was great! It started out fairly slow. You would never expect the twist that is thrown in at the end of the story. I won’t spoil it! I was completely caught off guard. This book is a must read for everyone.  [X]

The Wizard Heir

The Wizard HeirSeph always got expelled from the schools he attended because of “accidents.” His caretaker sends him to Havens, a school for troubled kids. Seph soon finds out that it’s a cult. He must decide whether to join.  I really didn’t really like it. It wasn’t interesting to me until the very end of the story.  [Yahoo!!]

Flight Explorer

Flight ExplorerThis comic book has a whole bunch of short stories (in comic form) including sci-fi, fantasy, and some just plain weird. There is a comic about mushrooms, a “perfect” cat, and much more.  My favorite comic was probably the first one because it has a very surprising ending. I also liked the comic involving this guy who got stuck in traffic on the way home from work, so he used an alterate “route.” It was a good mix of action, funny, and weird comics.  [ππ]

Elsewhere

What happens when you die? This question is impossible to answer because you never know for sure until you have the experience. Do you go to Heaven? Do you just die? Or do you go to Elsewhere?

Huh? Elsewhere? Yes, Elsewhere. It’s a place where the dead age backwards, only to be sent back to be reborn on Earth.

I loved this book! It keeps you turning pages. Once you start reading, it’s nearly impossible to stop. Unlike some other books, this book is good right from the start. It may look long to some people who aren’t big readers, but it won’t take long to read because you won’t be able to stop. This book has many parts that are very funny and very surprising. It was surprising when she woke up in a magic cruise ship, bald with random stitches behind her ear. It also surprised me when she found out about Elsewhere and how people age backwards. She was reunited with her grandmother who had passed. Her grandmother took her to get a job. There she found out that she could speak to dogs. She adopted the beautiful, little dog she had met. Find out more, check out Elsewhere!  [Unicorns Eating Rainbows]

Breaking Dawn

breakingdawnBella (a mortal) and Edward (a vampire) get married. For their honeymoon, they go to an island. Bella gets pregnant, but has a hard time surviving with a vampire/human baby inside of her. Will she live?

My favorite scene was when Edward and Bella got married. My favorite character was Edward because he protects Bella in the book. It made me laugh when Bella thought some of the names for the baby were lame. I think readers who love vampire romance would love this book!  [the leo lover 4]

Incarceron

IncarceronThis is a book of two different worlds. Claudia is living in the lap of luxury in a “utopian” society of feudalism, bound by protocol and rules. In the prison Incarceron, a narky-driven world, Finn is at its focus.  Finn is what people call an astarseer, and they believe he can lead them out of the prison. Claudia finds a crystal key that has a link with the replica that Finn finds. They must use it as a key to escape.

All in all, this book was mediocre at best. The wording was insufferably uninformative and bland. The plot was good, but you could kind of see the end. I would not recommend this book to read.  The sequel is Sapphique.  [frostling 101]

The Fire Within

A man named David Rain becomes a tenant at the Pennykettle house, which is full of clay dragons. He soon starts to write books for a little girl named Lucy. This book comes to life.

This book was a great starter that drew me into the series. I had to read more. It was pretty funny and had some good jokes. The cliffhangers kept me reading. This book was really unique, but the author could have added more.  [Gerrard 102]

Coraline

coralineWhen Coraline moves to a new house she notices some strange things, but her parents don’t believe her. She finds a mysterious passage to another world where her “other mother” lives. She becomes trapped in the other mother’s lair forever. How will she find her way out?

I really liked this book. Horror/fantasy books are my favorite.  [bubble gum pop 245]

Fire Star

Fire StarDavid Rain saves the girl he lives with from her evil abductor, who is her aunt.  That was not their only enemy though. A group called the IX is after David Rain. I thought it was a great book! The book was exciting, adventurous, funny, and mysterious altogether. This book was also sad because you could feel the people and how they felt. If the author had added more, I would have loved it even more!  Book 3 of The Last Dragon Chronicles.  [Gerrard 102]

Zorgamazoo

ZorgamazooKatrina Katrell lives with her aunt, Mrs. Krabone. She saw a strange creature and tried to tell her aunt, but just got scolded. The creature was called a zorgle named Morty. Morty and Katrina work together to find the zorgles that escaped from the Zorgmazoo. She meets all different kinds of creatures on the way.

I thought this book was very clever. I liked how the story used different fonts to express the story. I liked reading about all of the different characters and the clever, rhyming word choices. I liked Morty, but I liked Katrina better.  [Carebear 443]

The Fire Eternal

The Fire EternalDavid Rain, who mysteriously disappears, comes back from another dimension after five years to his wife and daughter that he never met. He once again has to save the world from Aunt Gwillina and the IX.

I thought this book was amazing. I never thought David would come back, and he does. This was a suspenseful, amazing and great book! It also had a little humor. Add a little more humor and it would be the best book in the world. This book is so unique, I loved it. Book 4 of The Last Dragon series.  [Gerrard 102]

The Beast of Noor

The Beast of NoorThis is a fantasy tale of unfolding mysteries and old myths that may or may not be real. The Shriker is the one thing that the people know is real. The Shriker haunts, or rather hunts, the people of Noor in the dead of night. The townspeople have labeled it a monster. Hanna and Miles Ferrell know it was their ancestor that made it what it is today. They must be the ones to stop it!

Sure, the book sounds great, but it really didn’t live up to my expectations. I liked the plot, but the characters were a tad bit too dull for my taste. Also, the author brought in fairies. In my opinion, fairies have absolutely nothing to do with a huge wolf that eats townspeople.  [Wild Pancake]

Witch Catcher

Witch CatcherA witch catches a creature and keeps it locked up in a little ball. A girl finds the creature and helps it out. She finds out that her father’s girlfriend is the witch catcher.  I liked the adventurous mood of this book.  My favorite character was the little creature. It could talk and was kind of sassy. My favorite scene was when the girl turned into a squirrel.  [Who am I?]

Icefire

IcefireIn this book a man named David is in a house full of clay dragons.  He is a tenant.  The girl who lives in the house gets abducted and taken to raise a dragon.  I thought it was great.  There was good writing, great plot, and the suspense was killing.  There were some great jokes but it was more to grab you and make you never stop reading.  If they added more it would be great.  This is an awesome, unique story.  Book 2 of The Last Dragon Chronicles. [Gerrard102]

The Lost Hero

The Lost HeroA guy named Jason wakes up on a bus and doesn’t know who he is. He has a girlfriend named Piper and his best friend is Leo. They find out that he is a demigod.  They travel to Camp Half-blood. Jason turns out to be the son of Zeus. They go on a quest to save a god named Hera. Annabeth finds out that Percy Jackson lost his memory and he is at a Roman camp.

I thought this book was packed with action. This is the next series of the Percy Jackson books. This book was good because I like learning about Greek gods.  [Finn the Human]

The Naming

The NamingMaerad is a girl in an unusual predicament. She’s a slave in a unforgiving place called Gilman’s Cot because of her family’s destruction in the war. However, fate is about to intervene and set her free. While milking the cows, Maerad meets a man named Cadman who is a magic user (bard). As it turns out, Maerad is one too, a powerful one. The two must now travel across the enchanting world of Amnar, where secrets and forgotten evil reside, waiting to destroy her.

Fantasy is definitely my favorite genre, and I’m always looking for a brand new plotline. However, this one is so similar to Lord of the Rings it destroys any kind of unique quality. Other than that, this book is pretty cool. The author’s descriptions of Amnar are strikingly realistic. I felt as it I was there myself.  [Wild Pancake]

Also, when Elaine is floating by in her pool, she finds Will sitting on spider rock and she screams and almost falls into the water. This book was funny!  :D   [ilovesmoothies]

Teenage Mermaid

Teenage MermaidWhile saving a drowning boy, a teenage mermaid saves him.  In the middle of it all, he accidentally rips her necklace off her neck. Will she get it back?  I liked this book because there are a lot of romantic parts between a mermaid and a mortal.  People who want to find out what happens next in this book will really like it. What made me laugh is the changes between each chapter. The overall emotion is romantic and funny.  [Misslovelydovey1]

The Tail of Emily Windsnap

The Tail of Emily WindsnapA merman and a human fall in love and have a baby.  The merfolk government finds out, puts the merman in jail and wipes the lady’s memory. The daughter turns into a mermaid during her first swimming lesson. She uses this ability to search for her dad and change the laws that are keeping him from her.

My favorite character was Emily because she would not let go, even when people told her to. My favorite scene was at the Rainbow Rocks, when Emily brought her mom there to make her remember.  [k9srgr8]

Graceling

GracelingPeople who have extreme skills called Graces are feared by the people who don’t have them.  Katsa has a Grace that any man or young boy wish to have: the Grace of Killing. She hates it ever so much because her Uncle Randa takes advantage of her great skill to get rid of anyone he despises. In this story there is violence, the elegance of a fighter, and friendship that turns into romance.

I liked how it showed you that you are unique in your own way and that there are people who will take advantage of you.  They might not like you because of who you are, but because of what you are capable of. But there are people who really do care about you, and that’s who you wanna hang out with.  [averybird9896]

The Mystery of the Fool and the Vanisher

The Mystery of the Fool and the VanisherThis guy goes into a shed and finds a recording. He listens to it and finds out there are fairies, and where they live.  This book was okay. The beginning kind of confused me. After that, the story was smooth. The fairies are very dangerous. There were also elves involved, but they didn’t matter.   [Donkey Kong]

Revenge of the Witch

Revenge of the WitchThe spook who has defended the local villages from nasty creatures, boggarts and witches, is in need of a new apprentice. His new apprentice’s name is Tomas Ward.  Will he turn out to succeed?  This is an epically scary thriller.  Book One of The Last Apprentice series.

What I liked about it was that it had a good sense of CSI-like mystery, lots of movie-like action, and thrilling horror. It never got dull, so once I finished the book I got the next one.  [Ghostwriter]

Malice

MaliceIn this blend of horror, fantasy, and … um … comics, Seth (and friends) journey into a horrifying comic book using a strange ritual which consists of putting a black feather, a twig, a tear, and a piece of hair into a bowl. Oh yeah, and you also have to set it on fire. After that you say “Tall Jake, take me away.” And, well, this creepy guy named Tall Jake takes you away to a magical world with ponies and fairies and – *hahaha* – hardly. In this comic book world, you will be hunted down (and most likely killed) by Tall Jake’s minions. So Seth and his friends journey into the comic and try to stop Tall Jake once and for all.

This is a nice blend of a graphic novel and a fantasy story (it switches between comic form and regular text). Also note that there is a sequel to this book called Havoc, and I actually liked it more.  But I can’t really think of anything I disliked about this book, it just isn’t anything special. I do still highly recommend Malice and Havoc, though.  [Qkzbv]

Amulet 1: Stonekeeper

Amulet 1: StonekeeperEmily, her mom, and her little brother move to their great grandfather’s house. They find so many things there.  This is an absolutely wonderful book! It leaves you in suspense. It has creepy parts and sad parts. I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. I cannot wait to read the second book! EVERYBODY should read this book!  [Chilly Socks]

Dark Calling

Dark CallingKernel has been able to see new lights that he cannot move, and which seem to be whispering to the Disciples, manipulating them. However, Kernel realizes that he is unable to tell anyone of his concerns since no one else can see the lights.  The whispering lights lead them to a ship where the group meets their most terrifying foe yet, The Shadow. The story ends with Kernel blind and alone, imagining Beranabus telling him that this is the end of the universe.

This book is so cool and mysterious. I love how the order of this book is placed.  [hehehahacupcakes!]

Well Witched

Well WitchedJosh, Chelle and Ryan are three best friends. They steal coins from the bottom of a wishing well and the well’s witch gives them powers. The powers make them do bad things.

I didn’t love it, but it was a pretty good. It took too long to get to the point. There weren’t many interesting parts of the book.  [greenflower38]

Seekers: The Quest Begins

Seekers: The Quest BeginsToklo, Kallik, Lusa, and Vjurak go on an incredible journey from their homes across miles and miles of plains, forests, mountains, rivers, oceans, and icelands to fulfill a destiny to save the wild.

I liked this book a lot because it made me feel all of the emotions in the story. One time my heart even started pounding as I read faster to find out what would happen. The tone of this story was suspenseful, mysterious, and super adventurous. This series is like the Warriors series, which is by the same author. All kinds of readers would like this book.  [Shadow]

The Door Within

thedoorwithinAidan Thomas has been having weird dreams. He is fighting a knight that escapes, but gets captured and killed. Aidan moved from Maryland to Colorado to live with his grandpa. He finds scrolls in the basement and his adventure begins.

This is a great book. I’ve read it about 20 times or more. I still like it! The best part was when Aidan was training and he rescued Gwenne and the knight. The funniest part was when he thought that the lantern spiders were Paragor knights. The saddest part was when Captain Valithor died saving Aidan. The greatest part was at the end when Aidan got the name of Knight of Dawn!  [Guesswho]

The Arctic Incident

The Arctic IncidentIn this book, our friend Artemis Fowl receives an urgent message from the Russian mob, saying they have his father and want a ransom.  In order to save his father, but of course keep his money, Artemis needs the help of his old fairy friends and his trusty right hand man, Butler.

This book was amazing. The last one really showed a part of Artemis’ personality, but who knew he could show emotion. He does in this book. I could not put it down for an hour into getting it. I was sketchy  about sticking with the series, but this book really made me sure that these were these were the books for me. There is nothing you can’t like about this book, and I recomend it to all readers.  [Achilles]

Vampire Kisses

vampirekisses_110Raven, the main character, has a love for vampires.  Rumors are spreading that her new neighbors are vampires.  She falls in love with the neighbors. Raven has to find out what is going on! I loved Vampire Kisses because I’m a sucker for a vampire story. Also, Vampire Kisses has a great mixture of romance and mystery. The story is mysterious and Raven is very mischievous. There is a very suspenseful ending. Once you read Vampire Kisses, you must read the rest of the sequels. It will suck you in!  [Kisa]

Syren

SyrenSeptimus goes on a mission to retrieve Jenna, Beetle, and Nicko. On the return home, their dragon got hurt and landed on an island. Septimus meets Syrah who is possessed by a spirit. He needs to help her, but when a couple of pirates and an army comes to attack, he has to have a plan.

During one part of the book, it gets kind of freaky! It is a pretty entertaining book that keeps you on your toes.  [Zombieguts]

battleofthelabyrinth_110Percy the main character has to go to his mom’s boyfriend’s school and gets expelled on orientation.  He meets a strange girl that can see through the mist. Next thing you know, Annabeth and Percy have to wait on their date, and then they go to Camp Half Blood. They’re sent on a quest inside the labyrinth, where they find Nico, the son of Hades. They summon Bianca to tell the truth, and Nico forgives Percy. Then Percy has a dream about Deadulus killing his nephew Perdix.  I love this book, especially the details.  [peacemaker299]

This is a thrill ride of who will get caught. While the Heaps are being chased, the castle is taken over by Darke Magyk. What will happen to the castle now?

I loved this book, especially the adventure. This book was full of thrill and suspense. Please read it!  [JELLYFISH]

Ghostopolis

GhostopolisThis guy (Frank Gallows) catches ghosts for a living that come back from the afterlife. When trying to catch a dead dinosaur, he accidentally draws teenager Garth Hale into the afterlife – now Frank will be fired if he doesn’t return Garth to the living.  In the afterlife Garth finds a kid who claims to be his grandfather, and while he’s there he grows and becomes 16. He switches clothes with a dead guy and they roam the afterlife looking for an exit.  After Garth encounters dungeons, caves, mummies and kings, Frank finally comes to the rescue.

I really like this book – it’s very funny and clear.  It’s a graphic novel that makes you feel like you can see, as if you’re in the story.  And it’s a really good story.  [master37400]

The Sea of Monsters

The Sea of MonstersPercy, Annabeth, and Grover are back in an exciting new journey!  After a year at Percy’s new school he has no trouble with monsters or anything – but on the last day, monsters attack him playing dodgeball.  Then at Camp Half Blood, the borders are poisoned by Luke.  Then Percy meets his half brother Tyson, who is a Cyclops.  Then Percy’s brother and his friends have to go on a quest to get the golden fleece, which will protect the camp’s borders.

I  thought this book was filled with action and epic moments.  It’s a must read books, so read it!  I recommend it to everyone ages 3-up.  [Finn the Human]
