Nick Gordon needs a cell phone for cheap so he can talk to his girlfriend, Jen. So when he gets a flier advertising a store that sells cheap cell phones, he’s overjoyed! Plus he got a newer one. The only down side is that it doesn’t have a caller ID.
That night, immediately after turning it on, the cell phone rings with a tone that sounds like a dying cat. Along with this, he’s freaked out because he hasn’t given his number to anyone yet. Nick cautiously answers the phone, and a frightening voice attempts to interrogate him.
And it all goes downhill from there. He gets calls from a woman scared for her life, the phone’s previous owner, and even from the damned. And the caller who resides in Hell wants to get out. He forces Nick to steal by threatening him with Jen’s life. And the purpose for the stealing is so that Fleck, the man in Hell, can escape, for reasons that may or may not be for good.
This was a great book, I finished it in one day! It has a lot of unexpected turns you’ll never see coming. This is the first book by William Sleator that I’ve read, and I’d definitely read his books again!! [John]
