The Lightning Thief

Percy is just a normal 6th grader, except for the fact that he has been kicked out of six schools, has a teacher who loves Greek mythology, a stepdad called “Smelly Gabe,” and a BFF who acts younger than twelve but has a beard. Weird, right? Things get even weirder when he is on a field trip and gets into trouble for something he didn’t do. Then he gets attacked by a teacher that he defeats with a pen-turned-sword from his mythology freak teacher, Mr. Brunner. Eventually, he gets kicked out of school and a stalker friend, a weird stepdad, a dead mom, a Minotaur, and some “tightie-whities” later, he finds himself at Camp Half Blood, a place for demi-gods. Percy gets introduced to some other demi-gods, Greek mythology, and camp toilets. He gets sent on a quest with his best friend and a daughter of Athena, where he must retrieve Zeus’ lightning bolt. He comes across a few issues along the way, but he has to keep going because Western civilization is a stake. Will he make it?

I LOVED this book! Learning about Greek mythology was really interesting. Annabeth was my favorite character because she didn’t let anyone mess with her and she was smart. Everyone should read this book. It’s fantasy, historical fiction, a little sci-fi, and romance (if you know where to look). [trh99]

Jack is an average eleven-year-old boy in A.D. 793. That all changes when he and his sister are kidnapped and enslaved by the Berserkers. This book was great! It started out fairly slow. You would never expect the twist that is thrown in at the end of the story. I won’t spoil it! I was completely caught off guard. This book is a must read for everyone. [X]

The Squire’s Tale

Terence becomes a squire for the soon-to-be knight Gawain. They both go on a quest to learn about Terence’s family. They earn glory for King Arthur’s Round Table. It was great! I only borrowed it by accident, but I was glad I did. It was hilarious and touching. [Guess who]

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon

A girl named Minli wanted to meet a man called The Old Man of the Moon to ask how to change her family’s poor fortune. On her way to Never Ending Mountain where he lives, she meets some good friends and a flightless dragon, too.

I loved this book. Maybe it’s my new favorite. It’s filled with great details. Once you start to read, you can’t stop – you just want to know what happens next! The dragon wants to learn how to fly and Minli wants to change her parents’ poor fortune. When she found the Old Man of the Moon, she could only ask one question [Joyful 44B]

The Egyptians believed they lived in the best land in the world. They believed the spirit could live forever if the body was mummified. My favorite section was about making a mummy. I also liked how they dressed the dead. The book was interesting because it had a lot of pictures. Someone who likes history would also like this book. Also, one of the most interesting parts of the book was about the animal mummies. [Mexican lover]

A guy named Jason wakes up on a bus and doesn’t know who he is. He has a girlfriend named Piper and his best friend is Leo. They find out that he is a demigod. They travel to Camp Half-blood. Jason turns out to be the son of Zeus. They go on a quest to save a god named Hera. Annabeth finds out that Percy Jackson lost his memory and he is at a Roman camp.

I thought this book was packed with action. This is the next series of the Percy Jackson books. This book was good because I like learning about Greek gods. [Finn the Human]

The Odyssey

This is a graphic novel version of the Odyssey. Odyesseus, a Greek hero, runs into a lot of trouble coming home from the Trojan War, including cyclopses, tidal waves, and evil nymphs. He also has problems when he returns home after many years of being away.

I thought this book was good. The illustrations were really lifelike and detailed. I especially liked how the author outlined the gods in color. You could tell who was a god in disguise because of this outlining. I haven’t read the real version, so I can’t say how accurate it is, but it was a great read. [pinkfairy123]

Tales from the Odyssey: The One-Eyed Giant

Odysseus is coming home after the Trojan war. He stumbles upon an island full of cyclopses. They become trapped. They blind Polyphemus and escape.

I liked it because it talks about my favorite part of the Odyssey. It talks about monsters, heroes, etc. It’s cool. I didn’t like that the front cover of the book is so weird. It surprised me to see that this version is different than the others I’ve read. It made me laugh to see how dumb the cyclops was because Odysseus blinded him. [Gegarth 34]

The Land of the Dead

Odysseus and his men are back. Their curse follows them at every turn. They must travel to the Land of the Dead. They meet giant cannibals, who almost rip them limb from limb, and then go to a beautiful witch. They defeat her and learn of their next challenge. This book had a lot of good twists and turns with very epic characters. I would recommend this book to other people. P.S. I loved it! Book 2 of the Tales of the Odyssey series. [LccL41cllc1A]

Have you ever heard of Nicholas Flamel? Well, the “myth” is true! Flamel is fighting evil creatures, and trying to find “gold and silver auras” to save the world from the evils of the dark gods. I think this book is very good and that every one should read it! I’ve read other books in the series too like The Magician, The Sorceress, and The Necromancer. The Fire Thief

This book alternates between the times of Greek mythology and the 1800′s. The main characters are Prometheus (the fire thief), Jim, the orphan robber, and Uncle Edward, the talkative robber. Uncle Edward can talk his way into houses and talk other people out of being hung. Towards the end, Uncle Edward escapes death.

The narrator keeps talking about how he wants to be a writer and also refers to modern technology, denying that moving, talking pictures are possible. Read this book to see how fire, Greek mythology, robbing, and re-deaths are connected. [Zebra Stripes37]
