Classic Cars

Classic CarsDuring World War II, U.S. automakers switched from making cars to producing supplies for the war. The Chrysler factory made tanks. This book had a lot of pictures of cars that were built after the war up through the seventies. Ford sold more than 400,000 cars for the 1965 model year.

I learned a lot. I was surprised to learn that the internal combustion engines create power by burning a mixture of fuel and air. If you like cars, you should read this book.  [QQQ]

Roman Legions on the March

Roman Legions on the March: Soldiering in the Ancient Roman ArmyThis book told how the Roman legions were trained and how they fought. It also showed their armor and the weaponry they used. I thought this book was very informative. I love Roman history. Roman legions are very complex and are the heart of the Roman army. The Roman legion was designed to fight forward, but could easily be defeated at the flanks.  [BABA]

Basketball

DK BasketballIn June of 2005, the type of ball used in the NBA was changed for the first time. It was now a leather ball. This book told about the history of basketball. It also talked about some of the greatest players and how to play the game. It showed all of the steps and rules. Readers will like this book since it gives a lot of information, including pictures.  [?]

Why the Cat Chose Us

Why the Cat Chose UsThis book tells about how cats were domesticated. It talks about cats in Egypt, and how there might even be earlier ones. This book shows pictures of many wild cats and tells how they’re similar to cats today. It explains how domestic cats are different from wild ones, along with the different breeds. I liked this book. It explained many characteristics of my pet cat that I didn’t understand. For example, you can find out why cats run around the house. It is fascinating.  [Captain Boofoo of the Pacific]

Michael Jordan, Returning Champion

Michael Jordan, Returning ChampionMichael Jordan succeeded and failed many times. He is most famous as a basketball player for the Chicago Bulls who scored lots of points. My favorite part of the book was when Michael shaved his head before a college game. He had a great game! The book gave me the will to play my hardest ALWAYS!  [Bundi 123]

How to Survive Anything

How to Survive AnythingThis book tells you everything that you need in order to survive anything. It also gives interesting facts. For example, Mauna Kea is the tallest volcano (30,000 ft.). This book was okay. Some of the things were dumb. One picture showed a kid about to surf on lava. There was also one kid, on the phone, sitting in a bathtub while flying a kite out the window when it was raining and lightning outside. Who would really do this? Common sense would tell you not to! There were other funny examples.  [??]

Michael Jackson: Ultimate Music Legend

Michael Jackson: Ultimate Music LegendMichael had an accident in his life when he was doing a Pepsi commercial – his hair caught on fire. This was a good book because Michael Jackson was an ultimate music legend. The book described him really well. People who loved Michael Jackson would like this book. I was surprised to learn how Michael changed throughout his career.  [the leo lover 4]

The Raven

The RavenThe speaker has lost someone he loves. He is taking a nap. All of a sudden, a knock came to the door. Rapping … rapping!  My favorite scene was seeing the raven. I thought that the pictures were a little scary or intensive. If you love poems, then this is the book for you!  [Mysterygirl 1143 :) ]

Flesh and Blood So Cheap

Flesh and Blood So CheapOne day in 1911, students and visitors sat in a park. They were relaxing and calmly studying. No one knew that the worst workplace disaster was about to happen. This book tells about the Triangle Fire. I liked it a lot! It had a lot of interesting facts that I would have never known if I hadn’t read this book. It was sad because of the tragedy.  [I Luv Queen]

Surviving Extreme Sports

Surviving Extreme SportsThe athletes are daredevils that survive many different kinds of stunts. One example, balancing on a powerline, is just one of the stunts. Keep in mind that these daredevils are professionals and have lots of experience. I liked this book because it has so many cool stunts. The book also has pictures that show what the athletes are doing. It is a pretty exciting book!  [anonymous]

Surviving Stunts and Other Amazing Feats

Surviving Stunts and Other Amazing FeatsDaredevils are performing crazy stunts all over the world. For example, a guy ate metal and not normal food.
A karate instructor broke 8 bricks in half.  One of my favorite scenes was when a guy was free running. My favorite character is Juha-Mati Rasanen, who has superhuman strength. What surprised me was a guy that was water skiing with his feet and gripped the rope with his mouth. Danny Way jumped over the Great Wall of China while skateboarding.  [oooo]

Eyewitness Knight

Eyewitness KnightThis book is about feudal societies and what it would be like to live in a time when castles dotted the landscape. It describes knights, lords, kings and more!  It was very informative about the Middle Ages, easy to understand and an easy read for all ages.  [No12345]

Pyramids and Mummies

pyramidsandmummiesThe Egyptians believed they lived in the best land in the world. They believed the spirit could live forever if the body was mummified. My favorite section was about making a mummy. I also liked how they dressed the dead. The book was interesting because it had a lot of pictures. Someone who likes history would also like this book. Also, one of the most interesting parts of the book was about the animal mummies.  [Mexican lover]

A Farm Through Time

A Farm Through TimeThis is an informative book about a farm through the years. It shows pictures of the farm from the Middle Ages to the present day. It talks about the roles of different farm workers played, the clothes they wore, and how the surrounding countryside changed. Each page is illustrated with a different part of the farm.

This book was okay. It would have been better if each illustration was of the same part of the farm, instead of different parts. That way I could have seen the little differences over the years. Also, I didn’t like how it dragged out the Middle Ages, but skipped straight from 1900 to 2000 – I’m sure a lot of changes happened then. Overall this would be a good book for someone interested in history.  [rkd]

World War II

Eyewitness World War IIIn this book one can learn everything about World War II. It tells about the Manhattan Project (a.k.a. the making of the atomic bomb) to the German Panzers.  I thought it was a good review of World War II. It talked all about the basics of the war in detail. It also had really cool pictures of weapons and other things used in the war. You should definitely check out this book if you want to know more about WWII.  [Changes are great]

The Complete Dog Book for Kids

The Complete Dog Book for KidsIf you’re ready to welcome an adorable monster into your home, try checking out this book first. It has so much about every breed you can possibly think of. The Worst-Case Scenario Survival HandbookAre you a risk-taker? Adventurer? A normal person stuck in a hard-to-handle situation? The most shocking ones are how to wrestle alligators, jump onto a moving train, and defuse a bomb. I recommend this book to travelers, adventurers, and people who are curious about how things work.  [I Luv Queen]

The Real Spy’s Guide to Becoming a Spy

This book is perfect for you if you want to become a spy.  It talks about veteran spies and what they did, different jobs you can have if you become a spy, and what you do if you are a spy. Personally, I want to be a case officer.  My favorite part is definitely the timeline of famous spy moves.  One of the best spy moves was when the Greeks gave the Trojans a gigantic wooden horse. They hid themselves inside it and then at night came out and attacted the Trojans.  [12345]

Cal Ripken Jr., Quiet Hero

Cal Ripken Jr., Quiet HeroLois Nicholson wrote a wonderful book on Cal Ripken Jr.’s life. The first chapter is about the 1991 All-Star game in Toronto, Canada. That was the year he won the Homerun Derby. The book goes on to talk about his young life and his early years in the minor leagues, all the way up to 1993 in the major league. The book also includes his MLB career statistics.

I really enjoyed this book about Cal Ripken Jr. It explained how he used to go to the ballpark with his dad. It also described his minor league career and other interesting facts about him. I honestly feel that this book could not have had any more information about Cal’s life and career. I suggest this book to all O’s fans.  [ AGA]

Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty

Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside ShortyThere is a boy named Robert and his nickname is Yummy. He  joins a gang with the initials BDN. The leader gives Robert a gun. He accidentally kills a girl. Robert is on the run from the cops. The gang members move him from house to house. His gang becomes tired of moving him, so they take him into an alley. Do they kill him?

This is a very good book. It teaches you a lesson.  [I Love Ravens]

Time You Let Me In: 25 Poets Under 25

Time You Let Me InThis book is filled with poems by writers under twenty-five years of age. The poems are about childhood, loved ones, and life.  One poem I really liked was “as far back as I can remember” by Jonah Ogles. It was my favorite.  I really liked this book of poetry because the poets were all young. I really related to some of them. All of the poems were really well written.  [courtney bourtney]

Anne Frank and the Children of the Holocaust

This is an awesome book about Anne Frank. If you haven’t heard of her, she is a girl about our age (middle school).  She lives a pretty normal life, almost similar to ours, with middle school drama, relationship troubles – all 0f that. But then World War II starts to affect her family.  Anne and her family, along with another family and a single man, go into hiding in a secret apartment-like wing of Anne’s dads work. She suffers from boredom, sometimes hunger, quarreling with people who live there, in particular, her mom. Then she starts to have a crush on the other family’s son, Peter. They are getting supplies from three people who are Christian and shop for them.

I like this story, but even at happy points, I know they get killed which pretty much sets a grim mood for the whole book. It’s interesting to see World War II from an actual persons point of view, let alone someone my age. It’s much more appealing than just a book full of facts. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially a middle school kid. It really makes you stop and think, “Wow, I’m really blessed in my life.” [bananapeel_42]

Car Science

Car ScienceThis book talks about the fastest cars.  It says how much horse power is in different types of cars.  Then it tells how long it takes for a car to go from 0 to 60 mph, and how many liters a car uses a minute.

I think the book is good for people who like learning about cars.  It’s got 4 different sections: Power, Speed, Handling and Technology.  [I live life]

Walter Dean Myers: Writer for Real Teens

Walter Dean Myers: Writer for Real TeensWalter Dean Myers talked about how life was hard and things were good in the old days.  He talked about his time in the military as a radio repairman.  He talked about how he wrote books like Slam and and how he played basketball in his down time.

I thought this book was okay.  It started out boring, like when he was in school and gets suspended.  Eventually, it was more interesting when he talked about how he wrote books and played basketball.  [master37400]

See How It’s Made

See How It's MadeThis book is about how things are made like skateboards and ballet shoes.  Also ice cream, oil paint, electric guitars and more!  Some surprising things were that people used to make white oil paint out of burned animal bones.  Also, in the old days people used to make yellow paint out of cow urine when they would feed them mango leaves in Bengal.  Another surprising thing is that the Roman Emperor Nero’s slaves created ice cream.

I liked this book because it has some interesting facts about things that you think would be just weird, maybe even disgusting.  I recommend this book to people who like making things.  [Soundwave0_51]

Anne Frank: Her Life in Words and Pictures

Anne Frank: Her Life in Words and PicturesRight now I am just starting the book.  Anne is telling us what the Nazis have done to the rules.  One thing they did is that Jews have to be indoors by 8.  The second one is that they have to walk everywhere, which is very very hard.  The last one is that everyone had to wear a gold star on their clothing, to school, for shopping, and just walking around.  [beamerbrit21]

The Constitution

constitution_110This book talked about our national government that had been planned during the Revolution and was based on the Articles of Confederation.  In the plan the national government was weak.  The states had most of the power because they liked it that way.

This book has taught me a lot about our history.  Over 200 years our Constitution has still been working.  We have changed it 27 times because we have some problems but it has brought more liberty to more people.  After the Civil War slavery was over. The 15th Amendment allowed adult men and former slaves to vote.  The 19th Amendment allowed women to vote. The 26th Amendment says you have to be 18 years old.

I found out what Shay’s Rebellion was all about. It was about how this boy, Shay, didn’t like how the government did not give farmers their money, so he started with a group of farmers to fight back.  The book talked about the three branches of the government and how they work.  It talked about the convention that made a new Constitution and how bigger states have more power than smaller states.  It is a really good book for someone to read so they can learn about our government.  [ANR]

Harriet Tubman

harriettubmanThis book would be great for anyone wanting to learn about the true life of Harriet Tubman or a great historical figure.  While Harriet was young, as a slave, she had a tragic life and got switched around from place to place a lot of times.  Her owner kept getting her back after the people who had bought her kept sending complaints.  She sometimes got separated from her family.

At one point in her life, Harriet met John Tubman and they decided to get married.  John was not a slave, unlike Harriet.  Afterwards, Harriet hired a lawyer to find out she was still legally a slave.  After a while, they found out that she was never supposed to be a slave, yet she still had to be one. How to Draw Hip-Hop

howtodrawhiphopThis is a good non-ghetto-yet-street hood book about art.  The main components of the book are b-boys and b-girls.  Although they explain how to draw people with street-cred, they explain that they can have class, too.  As Cas (the main character) teaches Shay (the other main character) all about art, this is going on.  Then near the end, Cas explains that you can get inspiration from magazines, the park, the internet, and other places.  This really caught my mind.  He said, “Don’t bite,” which means to take someone else’s artwork and turn it into yours.  Overall it was a good book as it guided you into a long, step-by-step process, till you create your masterpiece!
