Meanwhile

MeanwhileIn this book you have to make a simple choice – chocolate or vanilla. By the way, choosing one could lead to the end of the world.  This was a really fun book to read, but it was confusing because you have so many choices to make. I got lost a lot. Most people would probably like this book, but you have to get the hang of it first.  [TT TT]

Uglies

UgliesNew Pretty Town is a city that follows the high-life luxury of all-night parties with the latest technology. Your job there is just to have fun. In three months, Tally Youngblood will be there with her best friend, Peris and her other friends. All she can think of is being pretty until Tally meets a girl named Shay. Shay doesn’t want to be pretty. Tally ignores it until Shay runs away to a place called Smoke. When Tally meets the leaders of Smoke, they tell her the real truth about being pretty. Now that Tally knows the truth, will she keep the secret?  Or will she tell everyone the truth and risk being an ugly for the rest of her life?

I really liked this book. I have a thing for science fiction stories. If you liked The Hunger Games, then you will certainly enjoy this book!  [??]

Divergent

DivergentA lot of high schoolers freak out because they have to take a test to decide which society group they are in. It’s similar to The Hunger Games. The main character of the story was worried the most because after the test she still wasn’t in a group. She was a special kid in the divergent group, which is very rare. For the rest of the book, she has the challenge of not telling anyone because she can’t … “or else.”

My favorite part was when a girl was taking the test. She had to pick between a knife and a piece of cheese. Her reaction was funny because her look was how you would look when your friend is making no sense. I highly recommend this book to read.  [XYZ]

Dark Life

Dark LifeIn a somewhat post-apocalyptic world, where global warming has taken full effect, people are crowded into places like the Colorado Islands. Some pioneers have begun to live underwater. This book is about the escapades of a boy named Ty who lives in the underworld. The symbolism in the story is very interesting. The action in the story is very good as well.  [Sam Kin]

Variant

VariantSeventy kids are in a school that has no escape! It is a prison, and they are stuck there forever. Detention equals death. The main character is Benson. This book is action-packed! It is awesome and has great drama. I liked how it is written in modern times, it’s not ancient at all. It had a lot of sad themes as well. It was really emotional. Pick it up now to read!  [Mimo 123d]

Leviathan

LeviathanIt’s World War I, and Europe has been divided into Clankers and Darwinists. Clankers rely on steam powered airships, while Darwinists create airships out of  fabricated animals. The story switches between Aleksandar Ferdinand and Deryn Sharp. Aleksandar is the prince of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. However, he is thrown aboard a machine in the middle of the night and told to run. After his parents’ death, his own people want nothing more than his death. In comparison, Deryn Sharp is living the life of an airman in training aboard the Leviathan. Well, she isn’t exactly an airman. Deryn is a commoner in disguise, preferring the risks of the air instead of the safety of the ground. When the two meet, chaos ensues and war looms closer.

I have to say that I really loved this book. I’ve only read a little bit of sci-fi up to this point, but this was good enough to make me want to get the sequel. The points of view switch seamlessly. The author has such a good tone. He really makes you feel like you’re in the story. Get this book! But not the sequel … that’s mine!  Book One of the Leviathan Trilogy.  [Wild Pancake]

Airman

airman1Conor has always been fascinated with flight. He was born on a hot air balloon and lives in the time of the race to flight. He and his tutor, Victor Vigny, work hard to win the race. Luckily they are friends of the king of their country, the Saltees. They get funding for the science. Everything seems fine for the Aviators. Right? But a marshall, Bonvilion, kills Victor and the king. Conor sees it happen and Bonvilion catches him. Bonvilion takes Conor to the harsh Little Saltee Prison. Conor’s future does not look good. Can he survive at this prison and save the Saltees from Bonvilion?

I thought this was a great book. I could not put it down. It was so, so good! I especially liked Victor Vigny, the French aviator.  [duct tape man 11]

Airborn

AirbornOf course, Matt Cruse is lighter than air – he was born in the air. One day, as he was on duty, he spots a blimp. He finds the owner half-dead and brings him back to the airship. Matt talks to him and thinks the man has gone mad. The man says, “Kate would have to see it.” What is “it” and who’s Kate?  He finds the answers mostly by accident.

I loved this book! I read it three times already! I highly recommend it to people who like adventure, science, and maybe pirates.  [Fried Ice Cream 103]

Cherry Heaven

Cherry HeavenThe story follows two girls, Kataka and Tanka, who are both foster children and sisters. When Kat and Tanka move to Cherry Heaven, they like it. They have friends.  School is going well, until some unfortunate events start to happen that involve a girl named Luka Pappilon, a tough 17-year-old with a horrible past. She lived in Kat and Tanka’s house until her 7th birthday. Something happens and Luka is put into a camp, then a factory. She escapes and attempts to follow trails that will take her back home. You will never forget the ending if you read this book!  I really liked it. Not only is it science fiction, but the story has a lot to do with race and multiculturalism.  [???]

Blood Red Road

Blood Red RoadThis story follows the journey of a girl named Saba and her quest to save her twin brother. Following the kidnapping of her brother, she heads out to a changed world that is filled with crooks, freedom fighters, and a troublemaker named Jack.  It’s told in an odd kind of writing style that gives the book a genuine uniqueness. It takes a while to get used to it, but when the action picks up (trust me, it definitely does), it makes the book a lot less confusing. This is a book for anyone who has been craving a great adventure.  [Wild Pancake]

The House of the Scorpion

The House of the ScorpionThe life of a boy. Yes, we’ve all heard it. He grows up, lives a tale of adventure, and falls in love. But this one’s different. Matt, the main character of this book, is a clone. He lives in the nation of Opium, the drug land between Mexico and America. He was born inside a cow, so he doesn’t have a real mom. He lives with Celia in a little shack on a manor run by El Patron, the drug lord who’s over 140 years old. Matt has to be hidden from all the other people living on the manor because they might take him and lock him up for being a clone. According to the law, a clone’s mind has to be destroyed when it is born, but since El Patron is so powerful, he could break the law. That’s how Matt came along.

Matt eventually falls in love with Maria, the girl he has known since he was six. She helped him live a normal life and sometimes even forget that he is a clone. He knows that he couldn’t live without her, so they decide to escape together. They manage to escape out of a tunnel but get caught.  Matt realizes why El Patron has kept him all these years – he needs his heart. A newborn’s heart isn’t strong enough, and a brain-dead clone couldn’t live a few days. Matt decides to try and escape across the border, but what is there is even worse.

I loved this book, front to back. The characters all have distinct personalities, and the action leaves you at the edge of your seat. I think that anyone would look this book, and you should read this now!  [That Girl]

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Hitchhiker's Guide to the GalaxyArthur Dent is an earthling. His friend, Ford Prefect, is an alien who has been stranded on earth for fifteen years. He knows that the earth is about to be destroyed to make a hyperspace bypass. Ford takes Arthur hitchhiking on the Vorgon’s ship until they are kicked out. They are picked up by the president and Ford’s cousin on a stolen spaceship. Their quest is to find a mystical planet. Will it be inhabited or will they get shot down by missiles?  I thought this book was great! This science fiction book is a really good read.  [Magrathcrean 11]

Flight Explorer

Flight ExplorerThis comic book has a whole bunch of short stories (in comic form) including sci-fi, fantasy, and some just plain weird. There is a comic about mushrooms, a “perfect” cat, and much more.  My favorite comic was probably the first one because it has a very surprising ending. I also liked the comic involving this guy who got stuck in traffic on the way home from work, so he used an alterate “route.” It was a good mix of action, funny, and weird comics.  [ππ]

Daniel X, Alien Hunter

Daniel X: The Manga 1No last name. Just Daniel X. A three-year-old boy named Daniel has his parents murdered by an alien called the Prayer. Daniel’s job is to guard the list. The list contains information about alien outlaws roaming the earth. Daniel has amazing powers. He is able to create a molecular substances. What alien will Daniel X fight next?

My favorite character is Daniel X because of his amazing powers, his kind heart, and his funny personality. He really is amazing!  [KittenGirl]

Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25

Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25With the power to channel electricity, Michael is anything but normal. So when he finds out there are more like him, he has to know more. I loved this book, the plot, and the characters. It was very suspenseful and kept me reading and reading until the end. The way that the author doesn’t tell you anything about Cell 25, until you are right on it, is a good example.  [X]

The Hunger Games

Panem is a country made from the ruins of North America and has 12 Districts and the Capitol. The Hunger Games is a contest where 24 kids go in and 1 comes out rich and famous, created by the Capitol as a punishment for the rebelling of the Districts long ago. Katniss is a 16-year-old from District 12 with the power to survive and a BFF named Gale.

Simple, right? Not when Katniss’ sister’s name is called to participate in the Hunger Games. To save her sister’s life, Katniss volunteers to compete for her. But she must compete with Peeta, the sweet baker’s son who rescued her all those years ago. Katniss also has to worry about how her family will survive, and what Gale tried to say to her before she was taken to the Capitol. While training in the Capitol, Peeta, Katniss, some stylists, and a couple of crazy mentors come together to try to send a victor from District 12 home, until Peeta admits in an interview that he likes Katniss. Is it all for show? After that, Katniss is wary of Peeta and this continues even during the Hunger Games. But while she is trying to survive, Peeta is keeping an image – it could be the one of a ruthless killer or a lovesick schoolboy, and Katniss can’t figure out which. Who will survive the infamous Hunger Games?

This was an AMAZING book! I would recommend it to everyone. It has sci-fi, fantasy, crime, and a LOT of romance. It reminded me of Communism and ancient Rome a lot. My favorite scene was at the end when Katniss admits her true feelings, because it’s a time when Katniss finally lets someone other than Gale know her emotions, and Peeta sort of tells her off. Peeta is my favorite character because he was really sweet, kind, and honest. I didn’t like Katniss because she needed to have more fun and not be so mean.  Book 1 of The Hunger Games series.  [trh99]

The City of Ember

cityofemberLina wants to be a messenger, but is the pipe-works laborer. Doon is the messenger, but asks Lina to trade. Doon wants to trade jobs because that’s where the generator is for all the underground power. He has an idea of how to fix it. For the first time ever, the lights begin to flicker.

This book was great! It starts out kind of confusing, but the middle and the end are packed with action. My favorite part was definitely when they’re trying to escape from Ember before all the power goes out.  [12345]

Behemoth

BehemothThis book takes place during WWI, except that the reality is bent. In this setting, the Germans and their allies are called Clankers. They have intricate machines. The enemies are called Darwinists and they use genetically-engineered warships.  The main storyline is about a girl in boy’s clothing. She is pretending to be a male because she wanted desperately to get on a giant whale-airship. The other main character is an Austrian boy who turns out to be a prince.  I loved the space illustrations. I also liked the history part. Although it is a twisted history, it is fairly accurate. You will enjoy this book if you like science fiction.  Book 2 of the Leviathan Trilogy.  [Samkin]

Zorgamazoo

ZorgamazooKatrina Katrell lives with her aunt, Mrs. Krabone. She saw a strange creature and tried to tell her aunt, but just got scolded. The creature was called a zorgle named Morty. Morty and Katrina work together to find the zorgles that escaped from the Zorgmazoo. She meets all different kinds of creatures on the way.

I thought this book was very clever. I liked how the story used different fonts to express the story. I liked reading about all of the different characters and the clever, rhyming word choices. I liked Morty, but I liked Katrina better.  [Carebear 443]

The Angel Experiment

The Angel ExperimentA little girl is kidnapped by creatures called Erasers (half man, half wolf). Her foster brothers take a journey to save their sister before they turn her into a bird.  My favorite character is Max. For a girl, she is very strong and athletic. This book will blow your head off! It connects to the book Twilight – the two characters fight for love and their lives. This book is written in first person (Max). I got surprised when Angel was kidnapped. I could actually see in my head how aggressively they grabbed her.  [E 70]

The Other Side of the Island

The Other Side of the IslandThe future is about to change!  A great flood has prompted Earth Mother to seal up the Artic Ocean. The people are having reservations about what to do next. One step out of place  and one can disappear.  It might be boring in the middle of the book but don’t stop reading. Awesome with great suspense 5 out of 5!  [Mimo123D]

Science Fair

Science Fair: A Story of Mystery, Danger, International Suspense, and a Very Nervous FrogThese kids are trying to win the school science fair, but the rich kids always win because they cheat. The kids try to bust them and end up getting caught in a terrorist plot to destroy America.  This book is awesome!!  There’s a lot of action and some suspense, but it’s mostly funny.  Some scenes were so funny I almost fell off my chair I was laughing so hard.  My favorite character was probably the robot owl.  :)   [ππ]

I Am Number Four

I Am Number FourWhen Number 4, a.k.a. Daniel Jones, is at a party in Florida, he feels his leg burn. Number 3 is dead. He is next. He was supposed to get his legacies, train, find everyone else from Lorien, and fight the Mogadorians, the ones who destroyed Planet Lorien and want to do the same to Earth. But they found out and started finding and killing them first. When Daniel turns into John Smith, a resident of Paradise, Ohio, his plan is to keep a low profile and develop his legacies, his weapons. But he meets Sam Goode and Sarah Hart, and actually has a friend and a girlfriend. But when a fire goes wrong, all of that changes …

I absolutely loved this book! I was hooked! Bernie Kosar the dog was one of my favorite characters, and I loved what he did during the fight scene. Henri, John’s dad for all intents and purposes, is one of my other favorite characters. He fought until the end and was so brave. P.S. You might cry at the end of this when something happens to him!  [trh99]

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

20,000 Leagues Under the SeaThere is a huge beast in the ocean and a group of sailors trying to bring it down, but when they found the Beast was it really a beast? Can they bring whatever it is down?  It was a nice classic. I enjoyed this action-filled, adventure-packed, awesome book! I would recommend it to anyone.  [(<_>) HI]

Ender’s Game

Ender's GameAndrew Wiggin is the only boy who has the power to save the world. He nicknames himself Ender. He is a six-year-old genius and is being shipped off to Battle School to learn to fight the Buggers, which happened to almost wipe out the human race. Ender eventually commands a whole starfleet.

I really recomend this book for people who love action and sci-fi.  One thing I liked in this book is the battle room, a zero-gravity room for practicing combat.  [Destroyer12]

Fang: A Maximum Ride Novel

Fang: A Maximum Ride NovelMax finally has her family and is doing her mission to save the world. They meet a new hybrid named Dylan.  Evil MAD, the scientist, and Angel go to the dark side. The scientist is doing an experiment on Fang and something goes wrong.  Does Fang make it?

I think it was a cool story. It did not have that much action, but a whole lot of drama! The mood has suspense and romance. The ending surprised me.   [Bitterblue]

Virals

ViralsTory, Ben, Shelton, and Hiram sneak onto Loggerhead Island at nighttime and end up finding a skeleton. Loggerhead Island is a research facility. Why would skeleton bones be there? Something strange is going on there.  Further investigation leads them to Dr. Karster’s office. What they find could change them forever.

Virals is definitely a book for those who like Maximum Ride and Bones. It mixes science with action, making it a great read. It is over 300 pages. If you like a long book, you will enjoy this one!  [Wild Pancake]

Maximum Ride: The Manga 3

A girl named Max goes on an adventure with her friends. Fang, one of her friends, gets hurt so they take him to the hospital. Then the people at the hospital figure out that Max and all of his friends have wings.

I liked the whole story. It had lots of action in it. There’s one thing I guess I didn’t like, which is when it was over. This book was different than all of the other books that I’ve read. I really liked the imagination the author put into the book. Lots of people should read it. It’s also a series.  [Morgan]

Vampire Kisses 1: Blood Relatives

Vampire Kisses: Volume 1: Blood RelativesIn this manga, Alexander’s cousin happens to be in town – and that’s a problem for Raven and him. This half-vampire is out to become a pure vampire, along with some other friends.  What happens when Raven gets caught by them?

I really liked this book because I think vampires are amazing. Anyone who’s read and enjoyed the series The Vampire Kisses would like this book too! They’re basically the same, but Blood Relatives is in manga form. I think people of all genders will like this book.     [El Queso]

Found

Thirteen-year-old Jonah and his friend are adopted. Jonah’s friend didn’t find out he was adopted until they started to receive odd letters saying, “You’re one of the missing,” “Beware,” and “We’re coming back to get you.” All sorts of insane things happen, like time travel and teleporting. Everything leads up to Jonah, his unadopted sister, and his friend going back to the 15th century.

I loved this book because I couldn’t stop reading it! All of the pages had lots of action and mystery. There is a sequel to this book so the story doesn’t end. Yay!  [LoveBieber313]

Mockingjay

MockingjayIn the third book of The Hunger Games, Katniss’s worst nightmares happen. She finds herself in District Thirteen. Meanwhile, the other unrescued victors are still in the capital. The leader of District Thirteen is pressuring Katniss into being the Mockingjay. The war against the Capitol has begun. People are dying, but no one that Katniss cares about, yet!  I liked most parts of the book. I hated it when [OMITTED] died. I wish that [he or she] was still alive.  [BooksR4Geeks]

Catching Fire

Katniss is on her way home from the Hunger Games. President Snow threatens the lives of her family and friends. She is thrown back into another round of Hunger Games against previous victors. Will she survive?  This book was pretty good! It was very suspenseful. It was also full of twists and turns.  [Bob]

Life As We Knew It

lifeasweknewit_110Miranda and her family (and the whole world) learn just what can happen when there’s a global crisis, and discover how much they’ll sacrifice for survival … or death.

This book, despite how depressing the events are, keeps the reader interested with Miranda’s personal opinions and humor. I read this book from front to back in just a few days. That’s how well it was written. Only read this book if you can stand to hear a lot about death. No one knows how bad a meteor can be until it destroys life as we know it.  [Cratos17]

The Maze Runner

The Maze RunnerImagine an sprawling maze, miles and miles across, with stone walls a hundred feet high.  Fill it with terrifying creatures, half animal, half machine, with blades and needles for appendages.  Now add 50 teenage boys with no memory of their past.  Voila – you’ve got The Maze Runner.  Who created the maze?  Will any boys survive the monstrous Griever attacks?  Is there a way out?

I found this a fun read, primarily for the unique setting of the maze.  It’s sort of a cross between Ender’s Game and Lord of the Flies, with some horror and gore thrown in.  The teens have developed their own lingo, which can become annoying, and a few key points near the end were predictable.  Still, the suspense is maintained throughout, making it a quick page-turner.  Our Media Center also has the sequel, The Scorch Trials.  [Mr. Hobson]

Robot Dreams

robotdreamsDog is very lonely.  He thinks about finding a friend, so he makes a robot.  They go everywhere and do everything together.  One day at the beach, Robot gets stuck.  He can’t move so Dog leaves him.  Does Dog find Robot?  Does Dog find some other friend?

I didn’t like the book because it had no words.  Also, it wasn’t very creative.  [Orangestuff3]

School’s Out – Forever

maximumride2_110This is the actiony sequel to Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment.  Max and the rest of the flock find themselves living with an adult and going to school!  If you read the first book, you know that this is not Max’s first choice of a living style.  This happens after Fang gets injured by an Eraser!!

I loved this book!!  I didn’t want to put it down!!  I’m not much of a reader, but I have to say, this book was written in such a manner that you have to keep reading!  [miss talkative]

A Swiftly Tilting Planet

A Swiftly Tilting PlanetThis book is the third in the Wrinkle in Time series. In it, Meg and Charles’ father finds out that there’s a threat of nuclear war. Charles travels back in time with the help of a unicorn to change the past and save the future. I really like this book. It’s well written, and the connection between Charles and Meg is very interesting. I think everyone should read this book, even if you haven’t read the other two.  [pinkfairy123]

Grim Tuesday

Grim TuesdayArthur Penhaligon never wanted to return to the House. That was not to be so.  This time he has to survive Grim Tuesday, who happens to have the skill of creating things out of nothing.  With that he still has to survive being in a work camp of slaves, sailing into the middle of a star, befriending the laziest part of the will, and fighting hordes of nithlings all within one day.  Though not as good as the first book, it’s still a good read.  [grim tuesday]

Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports

maximumride3_110Max is no ordinary 14-year-old girl.  For one, she, along with 5 other kids, were created in a lab to save the world.  So having wings can only help, right?  Well, that’s partially true, except that this means the lab the kids escaped from are constantly tracking them down to capture them again.  It doesn’t help that she’s basically homeless, either.  One day she comes back from scouting for a home to find her flock completely gone.  All except for Fang, that is.  Now it’s her job to get them back.

This book is a page turner.  It has problem after problem.  It’s really exciting and of course has romance!  [The SpaceCowboy]

The Girl Who Could Fly

thegirlwhocouldflyPiper McCloud is a small town girl, but she has always been different. Ever since she was a baby she has had the ability to fly.  She has never gone to school; she has never interacted with kids.  So what happens when she goes on her first social outing and she’s determined to catch the ball?  She flies for it.  Well, that doesn’t go so well with the rest of the town.  The next morning her house is infested with the media and some government folks.  They offer her a place to be with other kids, to control her gift.  She takes the offer, leaving everything she has ever known behind.  But what if the school isn’t really what it seems?  Will her only enemy become her only ally?

This was a really great book. It doesn’t have much romance, but it’s really sweet. You can’t help but admire Piper’s honest personality.  [The SpaceCowboy]

The Secret Hour

In this town, time stops at midnight.  Well, it only stops for a hour, but when the time stops, the city is controlled by evil people!  There are people to protect them though … these people are called the Midnighters!!

Jessica has lived in LA all her life.  Now she is moving to this small town.  When time freezes, Jessica doesn’t.  Is she a Midnighter?  Will she get any friends in this small town?  [SpiritGirl29]

Unwind

In a world gone mad, three teenagers must fight for survival.  When every part of them is supposed to be harvested and used for other people, what is there to do?  Risa, Connor, and Lev must fight or be unwound.  Connor, the mysterious troubled delinquent, is being unwound because he is just too much to handle.  Risa is being unwound because the orphanage has to cut costs.  Lev is being unwound because he is a tithe, and is happy to be unwound … but not everything is as it seems.  [KittyKAT!]

Star Wars Tales

This book is awesome with lots of action.  It’s about different Star Wars characters and what they run into.  My favorite part is when they make the laser for the Death Star.  It’s a book worth reading if you want some excitement.  [Tx]
