Football Hero

Football HeroA boy named Ty who basically gets recruited by the spring football coach. Ty wants to be like his older brother who is a famous football player. When Ty asks his uncle if he can play, Uncle Gus tells him, “No!” Then Lucy starts asking about Thane, the older brother. Read this book to find out why Ty has to save them.  The Football Hero was very entertaining, I highly recommend it. Of course it’s about sports.  [EERR]

Wild Card

Wild CardThere are two twin brothers named Tiki and Ronde Barber. Both of them play on the football team for their school. The team does very well. Most of their wins are from field goals. Then, the kicker got bad grades and can’t play. The coach finds out that Ronde can kick. Ronde makes a lot of field goals, but in the semi-finals Ronde missed the game winner. He was really sad. Tiki cheered him up.

This was a good book. It taught me about the “heart” of a team. It’s more than just playing to win. I also learned about Tiki’s brotherly love.  [???]

Basketball

DK BasketballIn June of 2005, the type of ball used in the NBA was changed for the first time. It was now a leather ball. This book told about the history of basketball. It also talked about some of the greatest players and how to play the game. It showed all of the steps and rules. Readers will like this book since it gives a lot of information, including pictures.  [?]

Michael Jordan, Returning Champion

Michael Jordan, Returning ChampionMichael Jordan succeeded and failed many times. He is most famous as a basketball player for the Chicago Bulls who scored lots of points. My favorite part of the book was when Michael shaved his head before a college game. He had a great game! The book gave me the will to play my hardest ALWAYS!  [Bundi 123]

The Brooklyn Nine

The Brooklyn NineA boy named Scott from England loves to play baseball with his friends. He wears special shoes that are made by his father for him to pray. My favorite part was where it described Scott’s job. It was very a very sad story about what he does.  [cheese 12345]

Pick-Up Game: A Full Day of Full Court

Pick-up Game: A Full Day of Full CourtCaesar,Waco, ESPN, Nique, and Shane play basketball at the West 4th Street court known as “The Cage” in New York City. Some TV people come and they get into a debate about who gets to use the court. They play against each other to see who gets it.  My favorite character is Waco because he is quiet, but interesting. I liked it when Caesar got mad at Waco and punched and slapped him in the face.   [KJ]

Surviving Stunts and Other Amazing Feats

Surviving Stunts and Other Amazing FeatsDaredevils are performing crazy stunts all over the world. For example, a guy ate metal and not normal food.
A karate instructor broke 8 bricks in half.  One of my favorite scenes was when a guy was free running. My favorite character is Juha-Mati Rasanen, who has superhuman strength. What surprised me was a guy that was water skiing with his feet and gripped the rope with his mouth. Danny Way jumped over the Great Wall of China while skateboarding.  [oooo]

Crash

What happens is there is a boy and he plays football and a new boy moves in down the street. The new boy lives in a garage house and the football player (Crash) says, “Why didn’t you get a better house?”  Then the dad told him, “Life is not money or looking good, it’s about family and love.”

It was the best book ever!!  I read this a while back, it’s still my #1 book in the world, and we have it at Oakland Mills Middle library!!  [IloveJelly!!]

Cal Ripken Jr., Quiet Hero

Cal Ripken Jr., Quiet HeroLois Nicholson wrote a wonderful book on Cal Ripken Jr.’s life. The first chapter is about the 1991 All-Star game in Toronto, Canada. That was the year he won the Homerun Derby. The book goes on to talk about his young life and his early years in the minor leagues, all the way up to 1993 in the major league. The book also includes his MLB career statistics.

I really enjoyed this book about Cal Ripken Jr. It explained how he used to go to the ballpark with his dad. It also described his minor league career and other interesting facts about him. I honestly feel that this book could not have had any more information about Cal’s life and career. I suggest this book to all O’s fans.  [ AGA]

Football Genius

Football GeniusTroy White is an amazing football player. He also has a special ability to read defenses. Unfortunately, Jamie Renfro’s dad is the coach of his football team. That means Jamie gets to be the first string quarterback. When Troy loses a bet to Jamie, he needs to find a Falcon’s football. Troy and his friends steal a football from the Falcon’s middle linebacker. That is when the trouble begins.

I liked this book because Troy has to keep on trying to get what he wanted. Also, it shows good teamwork between Tate, Nathan, Troy, and Seth to get the Falcons back on track. This book is very good. I highly suggest that you read it!  [AGA]

Boost

BoostThis book is about two sisters. One of them wants to make the basketball team and the other wants to make the cheerleading squad. There is something wrong. The one who wants to join the squad is told she is too big and the basketball team thinks the other sister is too big as well.

I liked this book because the sisters didn’t give up. The one who joined the basketball team kept trying out for different teams. The other one who wanted to join the cheerleading squad worked hard to get a spot on the team.  [ILoveSnickers]

The Story of Baseball

This non-fiction book is split into two parts. Part one is about baseball’s history. Part two is about fielding, batting, strategy, and things along those lines. I think that this book is great not only because of the little milestones, but also because it starts from the beginning of baseball’s history and ends through the 1990′s. It truly represents the history of baseball.

This book was an awesome stat-filled book. For example, did you know that in 1920 Babe Ruth hit 54 homeruns?  That was more than any other team hit in total that year. Also, did you know that Bob Feller started his MLB career at the age of 17? I strongly recommend this book to all stat-loving baseball fans. [Baseball Trivia Master]

Juice

After a football team’s final, winning game with their favorite coach, Coach Reeves, he decides to retire. Soon, a new coach, Coach Barnes, trains the team for bigger games. However, the strength coach, Coach Tony, wants to give the team steroids.

What I liked about “Juice” was the drama put into the first chapter. In the last thirty seconds of the final football game with Coach Reeves, the main character, Moose, saved his football team from losing.

I also liked the hard, pressuring decision of whether to use steroids. There was even luxury equipment bought for the football team. I recommend this book to people who are interested in football. [Sonny 123]

Baseball: An Illustrated History

In this book, they talk about old-time baseball players. They also talked about the old equipment that was used. I liked the book because I love to play baseball and because of the equipment they used. I did not like all of the words. This book reminded me of Hank Aaron, one of the best baseball players in the major league. If you like the game of baseball, you will like this book. [Master Squirrel 764]

The Baltimore Ravens

This book is all about about the entire history of the Baltimore Ravens. It tells about their offensive players and the their Superbowl game.  What I like most about this book is how they give an entire history of the Baltimore Ravens football team.  I like to know about their history, and also how they teach plays that they run in the NFL.  [unknown too]

Collecting Baseball Memorabilia

The author includes many different wonderful sections on different things to collect. Somethings you would never guess could be collected. All collectors will enjoy this book! I liked that this book has many different things that you can collect. If you don’t like baseball cards, the possibilities are still endless! [AGA]

Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia EaglesChuck Bednarick was named the “Sixty-Minute Man” and “Concrete Charlie.”  He was a legendary tough guy. Coach Niele led the Eagles to three straight championship games. In 1998, Eagles drafted Donovan McNabb as their quarterback. In two seasons, he threw for 3,365 yards and ran for 629 yards. He led them to a 21-3 victory in the playoffs.

The book had  lot of information about the Eagles. It gave the greatest Eagles players’ names. It went in chronological order from the time they were founded to the end of the book.  [me]

Year in Sports, 2005

Year in Sports 2005This book lists the records in sports from 2003-2006. For example, it gives you the number of wins, the number of losses, and the number of ties in sports like football, tennis, baseball, soccer, etc. It also gives you different information about each sport.

I thought the informational book was great to read and find out the records for 2003-2006. It was awesome! I was surprised that it had 320 pages. Sports fans would most likely read it. There was not a weak part in this book of statistics.  [YYY]

Southpaw

SouthpawJimmy Fleming’s parents have just gotten divorced.  He has decided that he will leave his mom and go to Hudson City with his dad.  It was a hard decision, but he knew he belonged with his dad.

I liked this book because it’s a lot like the game of baseball.  You may have the best players in the league, but you can’t seem to win.  As in the Hornets case, they can’t win.  Yet, of course, they do, thanks to an unexpected hero.  Stay tuned or read the book to find out!  [AGA]

NFL Football: The Official Fans’ Guide

nflfootball_110When the Packers won the first world championship game AFL vs. NFL, they must have felt so great and had a party.  The Chiefs must have felt sad and mad.  Quarterbacks Bart Starr and Len Dawson battled on even terms and the Packers carried only a 14-10 lead into halftime.  The Packers won Super Bowl II.  They must have felt great when they were playing.  The Raiders must have felt sad and mad like the Chiefs when they lost.  Another 23-yard Lamonica-to-Miller TD pass was too little and too late.  Super Bowl III the Jets won 16-7 against the Colts.  The Jets felt great I bet.

Heat

heatOn the streets of New York, the best game is baseball.  Michael Arroyo, he’s a very good pitcher, too good.  His dream is to make it to the Semi-Junior Pro Leagues.  Suspicions arise as to that Michael Arroyo is actually from Cuba (for those who don’t know, Cubans are considered aliens in America unless they’re allowed).  Now it’s the last game of the playoffs, the championship.  Who knows if they’ll let Michael play or not.  This is good for people who love fiction and baseball.
