During last summer’s HCL Summer Reading Program, OMMS students beat out all other Howard County middle schools to take the trophy for highest level of participation. Ever voracious, we followed that up by checking out more books from the OMMS Media Center than last year – 55.3% more!

As we switch back to summer reading mode, HCL librarians will present this year’s Summer Reading Program during reading classes on Tues 5/29 and Weds 5/30. We’re confident we’ll be adding a second trophy to our collection.

In the meantime, all Media books were due back Tues 5/22.

Congratulations to all Falcons for your strong reading culture. Please remember to your Media books tomorrow (or as soon as possible), and participate in the HCL Summer Reading Program!

Wake

This book was great! The author’s point of view and style of writing felt totally different than in Lisa McMann’s other thrill-filled mystery, Cruel Cross. The whole trilogy of the Wake series sounds interesting. I loved how McMann divides each chapter by the dates, rather from first person point of view to its third person point of view. I really loved this book. You won’t have to tell me twice to read the next book in this wonderful series! [Rocky 158]

Flawless

This is a sequel to Pretty Little Liars. Who is is A? Is A gone – or is he back? The four girls have their suspicions, but A is too clever for even them. A has some big surprises for his girls in this book. I absolutely loved it! It was so good and even more interesting then the first, which is hard to believe since the first book was so great! See, I’m so excited about how good this book is that I’m using exclamation marks for every sentence! I would definitely recommend this book to all. I was never bored, and I just couldn’t stop reading! I will definitely continue to read the rest of the series. [moomoomoo 222]

The Ruins of Gorlan

Will and his wardmates are going to “The Choosing.” This will determine their trade. Will is determined to become a Ranger, even though he has always feared them. He adapts to Halt, his master, and begins training. Soon he goes hunting dangerous beasts, the Kalkara. Halt and others are injured, but Will stops them. He becomes a legend.

In this book, Will reminds me of myself. He is creative and really hardworking. Also, he adapts to his new master. I think I have adapted a lot to new people. Book 1 of the popular series The Ranger’s Apprentice. [nk]

Classic Cars

During World War II, U.S. automakers switched from making cars to producing supplies for the war. The Chrysler factory made tanks. This book had a lot of pictures of cars that were built after the war up through the seventies. Ford sold more than 400,000 cars for the 1965 model year.

I learned a lot. I was surprised to learn that the internal combustion engines create power by burning a mixture of fuel and air. If you like cars, you should read this book. [QQQ]

Will Work for Prom Dress

Quigley needs a prom dress, needs to find a job, and most importantly, needs a prom date! How hard could that be? Well, she just lost hr job, doesn’t have enough money for a dress, and definitely cannot find a date. Then things start to look up! Anne, her BFF, finds them a new modeling job and she meets Zander. Is he a possible future date? Will Quigley get her dress and a dream date to the prom? Or will something or someone ruin it for her?

I really loved this book! It was a realistic story, one that relates to middle school girls. I would definitely recommend this book to read. It’s the perfect mix of realistic fiction, with just the right touch of humor, sadness, and romance [dizdiv]

Roman Legions on the March

This book told how the Roman legions were trained and how they fought. It also showed their armor and the weaponry they used. I thought this book was very informative. I love Roman history. Roman legions are very complex and are the heart of the Roman army. The Roman legion was designed to fight forward, but could easily be defeated at the flanks. [BABA]

Cleopatra Confesses

After her father comes back from his trip, Tryphaena and Berenike decide to rule. Soon after, they both die and Cleopatra becomes the new queen. She is very loyal and true to her people. So far, she is the greatest Pharoah that Egypt has ever had. This was a good book. I never knew that jealousy could go so far as to kill. I really enjoyed reading this book. [Cleo]

Public Enemy Number Two

Nick Diamond was framed for a jewelry robbery. He is sent to prison with Johnny Powers, Public Enemy Number One. The only way to escape is to get help from his dimmer brother, Tim. This book was amazing. I could not find a spot to stop because the whole story was so good! If you want to know the rest of the story, go ahead and read this book! I highly recommend it. Hoot

The main character’s name is Roy. He lives in Florida and is bullied by someone named Dana. One day on the bus, Roy spots a kid who is running. There is something very unusual about him. After a few days of watching the “running boy,” he gets to meet him. Later, they become good friends and suspect something strange about the holes in the ground. Who or what is making the holes? You will be surprised!

This book has a lot of good details. As you read, it is easy to picture in your mind and figure out what is happening at different times during the story. Some parts of the story make you want to see what is going to happen next and you can’t stop until you find out. [XXX]

Everything was going just right for Walter Davis until he found out that his mom had lung cancer. She dies and he ends up homeless. He meets a girl that he really likes, but he messes that up. Eventually he gets involved in a business, but it turns out to be a Ponzi scam. He feels like the world might end! Do things get better for Walter?

I really liked this book. It tells you not to take anything for granted and not to judge someone by how they look. I did not want to put it down, it’s just so good! [fortune cookie]

When Ty asks his uncle if he can play, Uncle Gus tells him, “No!” Then Lucy starts asking about Thane, the older brother. Read this book to find out why Ty has to save them. The Football Hero was very entertaining, I highly recommend it. Of course it’s about sports. [EERR]

Middle School Is Worse Than Meatloaf

Ginny, a girl who is starting school, makes all these different kinds of lists for the new school year. She makes a new friend named Becky Soo. She tries to get back together with her old friend, Mary Catherine Kelly, but fails. She tries her best to make her year fun, but it seems just the opposite happens. Her dad is dead, she didn’t get the part in the “Sugarplum Fairy” that she wanted, and she broke her wrist. In fact, she had a pretty rough year even though she kept strong and stayed healthy.

I thought the title was a little strange at first, but when you finish it you’ll finally understand the meaning of the title. It was a bit sad in the middle of the book. I do recommend it. [carebare 443]

There are two twin brothers named Tiki and Ronde Barber. Both of them play on the football team for their school. The team does very well. Most of their wins are from field goals. Then, the kicker got bad grades and can’t play. The coach finds out that Ronde can kick. Ronde makes a lot of field goals, but in the semi-finals Ronde missed the game winner. He was really sad. Tiki cheered him up.

This was a good book. It taught me about the “heart” of a team. It’s more than just playing to win. I also learned about Tiki’s brotherly love. [???]

Kacey Simon is the most popular girl in the 7th grade. Every morning, she broadcasts her special segment, “Simon Says,” on the school news. In the afternoon, she attends play practice and plays one of the main characters, along with her crush, Quinn Wilder. Basically, Kacey lives the perfect seventh grade life until her eyes start malfunctioning. She gets into an accident with a disco ball at the party of her best friend, Molly. Kacey, after the disco ball incident, finds herself with glasses, braces, and an absolutely DISGUSTING lisp. Kacey’s popularity level immediately drops from “popular girl” to “complete loser” when her three best friends turn on her, along with her crush. Kacey discovers a way to bring back her popularity level, but it’s extremely risky. It involves Kacey associating with some of the dorkiest people she has ever met. With one little slip with this plan, Kacey’s social life could go down the drain.

This is an excellent book for anyone who’s a fan of “The Clique” and who likes to read books about popularity and gossiping. This was a fantastic book! Even though not much happened in the beginning of the story, it still kept my eyes locked on the words in the book. [CR??]

The mean girl Mackenzie made Zoey and Chloe be on her side (the mean side) and Nikki quit the talent show, but she found a band and signed up again … and lost. My favorite characters were Zoey and Chloe and Nikki. My favorite scene was when they were going to make an album. [J Rock]

In June of 2005, the type of ball used in the NBA was changed for the first time. It was now a leather ball. This book told about the history of basketball. It also talked about some of the greatest players and how to play the game. It showed all of the steps and rules. Readers will like this book since it gives a lot of information, including pictures. In this book you have to make a simple choice – chocolate or vanilla. By the way, choosing one could lead to the end of the world. This was a really fun book to read, but it was confusing because you have so many choices to make. I got lost a lot. Unbelievable

This story is a continuation of the last one. There are four girls trying to find out who killed their childhood friend, Ali. Each girl has her own problems, but Hannah is the one who knows too much about “A” and the whole situation.

I loved this book! It’s not humorous, but also very dramatic. I loved the suspense and how it tricks you into who “A” really is. I watched a few shows and decided to read the book. I had to keep reading to find out who murdered Ali. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Book Four of the Pretty Little Liars series. [??]

Following the events of Incarceron, Finn has escaped the prison, only to find that outside life isn’t all that good. Between trying to save his friends and keep himself alive, Finn is quite busy. Speaking of friends, Keiro attempts to locate the Grove of Sapphique, which will allow the bearer to escape the prison.

The story was okay. It was not the best book that I’ve ever read. It was a bit confusing, but I will say that it was better than the first book of the series. I won’t recommend this book to read, but at the same time, I won’t say not to read it. [!!??]

Blue Bloods

I really, really loved this book. In fact, I love the whole series! It drew me right in when I started to read. It’s not like any other vampire book. It’s very different, which is why you should read it! [dizidiv]

A man goes on a journey to fight evil, and then goes back home after the end. My favorite character is Zozimos, and my favorite scene was where he was scared of something. The weakest part of the book is where he was supposed to fight a soldier instead of getting scared of him. The surprising part was where he fought a large soldier. [lightning 451]

Eric Hayes has just moved to Bellport Long Island. He meets and becomes friends with Griffin, the school bully. He witnesses bullying. Eric sees Griffin helping older people, but then Griffin turns around and steals from them. Eric also notices that Griffin and his friends bully a kid. What does Eric do? Does he just stand by or does he have a way to stop the bullying? This was a good book. It really made me think and it will do the same for you. I suggest you read it! [???]

The Princess and the Pauper

Carina is a real princess, but she doesn’t want to be. She just wants to be a normal teenager and be free. While she is on a trip, she wants to meet up with her online friend Ribbit. To get away from “Kiljoy,” she ends up switching places and identities with a girl named Julia. I liked this book because it was pretty interesting. Most teenage girls, whether or not they are a princess, can relate to this kind of situation. It’s kind of interesting to see the ending, since the two girls had switched lives and identities. [X]
